WHAT'S IN A NAME...

Naming your child is a tricky task but we promise that it can be a magical experience too! We have some top tips to help you find the right name for your wonderful new addition…

Recently I was making small talk with another mum in a park while we fed some hungry ducks. She asked my baby’s name and when I told her it was George, she said “I love that name!” to which I replied, “Me too!”. Face palm moment – of course I do! We laughed but I realised I’m still kind of surprised I found a name for my second child that I love this much. His name is name is as gorgeous as he is and it makes me smile every time I say it.

For all those parents who have named a child before – remember how intimidating it can be? For those expectant parents – look out! It’s definitely a big responsibility to bestow a name on another person, but also a beautiful opportunity to give your child a name that demonstrates your love and care for them every day of their life, even after you’re gone.

This time round I found some great ways to make sure we had a smoother track to finding ‘the one’… see some of our top tips below.

Agree your approach to deciding on a name Talk with your partner about when you want to lock the name down – this will give you a time frame. Play the long game – to find the right name, you need to have enough time. Long car journeys can be a good time to discuss this – you don’t want to get to labour and realise you wanted to name your baby on the spot and your husband wanted to wait three months to figure it out!

A name for all ages – the 5/15/50 test. This is a good one –before you lock in a name or names, ask yourself – will it work when they are five years old? Fifteen years old? Fifty years old? Sometimes a name that is oh-so-cute for a baby would sound strange to you for an older person, so if you get three yesses for your possible name, you’ve passed the test!

The Kinder app – like Tinder, but for baby names! Have you heard of Kinder? This one can be a life saver for those who can’t quite agree on a baby name with their significant other. You link your account to your partner’s and then it’s like Tinder in that you swipe left or right for names you do and don’t like. You get notified of your matches, and even if you don’t find ‘the one’, its definitely a good starting point.

Have a backup plan - Sometimes a name that sounds amazing at 13 weeks sounds odd at 24 weeks, and sometimes your little James comes out looking like a George! Or you didn’t find out what you were having but were secretly convinced you were having a girl but uh-oh – it’s a boy! We recommend at least two options for each sex, just to have your bases covered…

Look at what their full name would be. When we heard that a friend recently shortlisted a first and middle name that could be shortened to ‘Jim Bob’, we realised you need come at names from every angle – long, short, shorter and don’t forget look out for initials (Benedict Ulysses Murphy would be an unfortunate monogram for example).

Don’t be afraid to put your heart into it! This is a name you will say so many times in your life – in adoring love, in exclamation, in frustration and yes in anger too, and it’s ok for it to be a name you adore for any old reason. It might be because you heard it when you were 14 and decided it would one day be your son’s name, or it is the name of a lost loved one, or because it is a bloody cool name and you just have to give it to your newest favourite person.
