Best Personalised Baby Blankets in Australia: A Buying Guide

If you are shopping for a personalised baby blanket in Australia, the hard part is not finding one. It is working out which size, which knit and how far ahead to order — because almost all of them are made to order, and that catches people out. This is our guide to choosing, written from what we actually get asked.

1. Start with the size, not the design

Size is the decision people most often get wrong, because it depends on when the blanket will be used rather than how it looks.

  • Bassinet, 75 x 85cm. Fits a bassinet, pram or capsule. The usual choice for a newborn gift or a baby shower, because it suits where the baby actually sleeps in the first months. Bassinet blankets.
  • Cot, 95 x 105cm. The most popular size and the one we would suggest if you are only buying one. It works over a pram early on and stays useful for years. Cot blankets.
  • Single bed, 105 x 165cm. For a child out of a cot, or as a keepsake that will not be outgrown. Also the one people use over the end of a sofa. Single bed blankets.

A double bed size is available in selected styles. Not every design is knitted in every size, so if a particular colourway matters more than the size, check its product page first.

2. Then choose the knit

The knit changes the weight and the look far more than the colour does.

If you want a character rather than a pattern, our officially licensed Miffy, May Gibbs and Rock Your Baby collaborations use the same name placement. The whole range sits in all blankets.

3. Understand what "personalised" means here

This is worth checking whoever you buy from. On a Namely Co blanket the name is knitted into the blanket itself as part of the fabric, in a contrasting ivory against the base colour. It is not printed on afterwards and it is not embroidered on top, so there is nothing to peel, crack or pull loose in the wash. Our signature dot is added after the name.

Because the name is part of the knit, it also means the blanket cannot be remade if the spelling is wrong. Check it carefully at checkout — your confirmation email includes a preview.

4. Order earlier than you think

This is the single most common mistake. Each blanket is knitted individually once you order, so allow 4-6 weeks from order to delivery. If you are buying for a due date, a birthday or Christmas, work backwards from that.

Two exceptions. A small number of styles are held in stock as ready to ship and dispatch from our Melbourne warehouse in 1-2 business days. And an order containing both a made-to-order and a ready-to-ship item is held until everything can go together, so it is worth ordering those separately if one is urgent.

Australian delivery is $12 standard or $16 express from Melbourne.

5. Buying as a gift before the baby arrives

If the name has not been decided, or has not been announced, you have two sensible options.

Order the bassinet size once the name is public — it is the smallest commitment and the same design can usually be reordered larger later. Or give a gift voucher, which arrives by email with no make time to plan around and lets the family choose the name, colour and size themselves. For smaller gifts that still carry an initial rather than a full name, the letter beanies and letter socks work well.

More options in personalised baby gifts.

6. Caring for a knitted blanket

Hand wash, or machine wash on a delicate cold cycle. Lay flat to dry in the shade. Do not tumble dry, bleach, or iron directly on the knitted areas. Done that way a cotton name blanket holds its shape for years, which is rather the point of buying one.
